IRIS…mommy nak dandee..Bring Dandee to mommy!!

August 19th, 2007 by kellykiyut

JUST A TRIBUTE TO MY IRIS’ DEVELOPMENT…reaching the age of 1..my daughter is no longer a baby..she is a toddler now..!!but to me…she will always and forever be my baby!!!it has been a year plus journey for her…and according to her medical record book…she is growing well…

Now iris understands to instructions and responds well to it…being able to have a 2-way communication with Iris really bring tears to my eyes….i tested her a few times..just to be sure…

I told iris…’Iris..mommy wants Dandee(her donkey soft toy)..please bring dandee to mommy’….and at the end of that sentence…she will get up and walk towards her dandee…pick it up and walk back to mommy and pass Dandee to mommy!!

I also tried the simple instructions taht she can respond even before she reaches 1 year mark…that is….’Iris…muah mommy’…and straight away she will give u a kiss….’Iris bye bye’…and she will wave bye bye to u!!

Having her own personality development….some things that u told her not to do…she just wont listen…heheheheh…like….’Iris…dont switch of the TV!’…instead of doing as we instructed….she’ll turn her head with her finger on the TV switch….with that naughty smile…and just do the opposite!!heheheh….she knows u dont want her to do that…

Now that she understands what we say to her….insyaAllah…there will come a time when she will talk with me!!heheh…baby Iris ….there are already a few words (ur language) from you…mommy will patiently wait for more….love u lots….!!

Even in the rich nations, the babymilk manufacturers areundermining breastfeeding

Even in the rich nations, the babymilk manufacturers are undermining breastfeeding

By George Monbiot. Published in the Guardian 19th June 2007

Like most of the world, I was mistaken. I thought that the aggressive promotion of baby formula was a problem confined to the poorer nations, where weak or complicit governments are pushed around by corporations, and mothers are gulled into swapping the breast for the tin. But after I wrote about the bullying of the government of the Philippines by baby formula companies a fortnight ago, the National Childbirth Trust and Baby Milk Action got in touch to tell me a story much closer to home.

We don’t have mass deaths from dysentery in the United Kingdom, though babies here are five times more likely to be admitted to hospital with gastro-enteritis if they are bottle-fed(1). But if children don’t breastfeed they become susceptible to an astonishing range of illnesses and conditions, regardless of how rich their parents are. A study of 600 Dutch people around 50 years old found that those who had been bottle-fed had higher rates of risk factors for cardiovascular disease than those who had been breastfed(2). A meta-analysis of studies covering 69,000 children found that breastfeeding protects against obesity(3). It also appears to reduce the incidence of asthma, allergies, childhood cancers, diabetes, ear infections, Crohn’s and colitis(4).

So how well do we do? About as badly as a developed nation can. In a recent survey of 16 European countries, the UK comes second to last, beating only Belgium. When our babies are six months old, just 21% of them receive any breastmilk. In Norway the rate is 80%. Twenty-four percent of British babies never taste breastmilk at all; in Norway it’s 2%(5). Remember this next time someone tells you that the rate can’t be increased because lots of women can’t produce milk. The constraint is not biological but political. The Norwegian government has passed laws which make breastfeeding as easy as possible: all women are entitled to a year’s maternity leave on 80% pay and state employees are given special breastfeeding breaks.

Here we have been allowed to remain in an almost mediaevel state of ignorance. A survey by the Department of Health found that a fifth of women under 24 thought that breast feeding would ruin their bodies. Women greatly overestimated the difficulties of producing milk. But perhaps most significantly, 34% believe that infant formula milks are “very similar” or “the same” as breastmilk(6). A poll by Mori for the National Childbirth Trust found that around a third of women had received the impression that infant formula was “as good as” or “better than” breastmilk(7).

How could this idea have persisted, despite all that we now know about breastfeeding? Partly because the formula companies have been able to keep making bold claims about their products. In January the body which coordinates the enforcement of trading standards sent a letter to all the local authorities in the United Kingdom. It listed five kinds of claim which are not compliant with British regulations on selling infant formula(8). One of them was “closer than ever to breastmilk”. Yesterday morning I bought three cartons of infant formula from my local co-op and chemist. On the front of Cow & Gate’s packet is “Closer than ever to breastmilk”. Sma Gold is “now even closer to breastmilk”, while Milupa’s aptamil is “the closest to breastmilk”.

The claim that “prebiotics” support a baby’s “natural defences” is also ruled out. But yesterday I learnt that “babies thrive when their natural immune system is supported, so Cow & Gate babymilks are developed with special nutrients, such as prebiotics, that can do this. It’s our way of helping you to protect your baby.” The Aptamil packet claims that “prebiotics … support your baby’s natural immune system”. It also made claims about fatty acids, nucleotides and beta-carotene of the kind the letter warned against. All five of the examples listed in the letter, in other words, appear on just three packets. The packaging also seemed to contravene a guideline laid down by the World Health Organisation in its international code on breastmilk substitutes: that containers should not show “pictures or text which may idealise the use of infant formula”(9). The aptamil box carries a picture of smiling faces hanging from a baby’s mobile. Cow & Gate’s carton has a cute picture of a teddy bear with a bottle, and Sma has a fluffy duckling sleeping with a contented smile.

Baby Milk Action contends that some companies have found a clever way of getting round the law banning adverts for infant formula. They legally advertise follow-on formula instead. The packets of infant and follow-on milk sit next to each other on the shelf and look very similar: the advertising for one product is likely to affect sales of the other. Campaigners point to some adverts which don’t make it clear which of the two products they are promoting(10). When they complained to the Advertising Standards Authority, it told them that it won’t investigate unless the adverts specifically mention infant formula. Follow-on milk, according to the World Health Assembly, is unnecessary(11).

I would not suggest that a woman sees a fluffy duckling and thinks “right, I’ll give up breastfeeding”. But if she is having trouble feeding her baby, the packaging appears to offer reassurance. “Closer than ever to breastmilk” might sound close enough.

The law can be tightened up, but only with your help. For the past three years, the British Food Standards Agency - having at last got something right - has been pushing the European Commission for tougher rules. Outgunned by corporate lobbyists, it has mostly failed. In December the EC issued a new directive which, far from banning the advertising of follow-on milk, appears to ban the banning of it(12). Though the commission’s own scientific advisory body says the manufacturers should remove all nutrition claims except “lactose free”(13), the new directive would allow companies to make other statements for which the scientists say there is no evidence(14). An obscure rule allowed the commission to draw up the directive without consulting the European parliament(15). The bureaucrats and the corporate lobbyists have been unmolested by the interests of the hoipolloi, and it shows.

The British government has some discretion about how this directive will be passed into law, and the Food Standards Agency is currently drawing up a legal instrument for implementing it. But it has hit another obstacle: a corporate sleeper cell inserted into the heart of government by Tony Blair, called the Better Regulation Executive. Its function seems to be to block any rule that might interfere with companies’ ability to make money. Its executive chairman, William Sargent, previously ran a company which produces digital images for the advertising industry(16). Government officials report that Sargent is fiercely opposed to making the advertising rules any tougher than the directive requires.

Left to their own devices, our two prime ministers will put healthy profits ahead of healthy children. So they must not be left to their own devices. We have one chance, by lobbying Downing Street, to help the progressives in government to beat back the corporate yes men. We should use it.

Triple Discovery In Human Nutrition!!

July 30th, 2007 by kellykiyut

Being a Mommy myself, of course i want only the best for my baby!!!hehehe…looking at all the milk selling in the market…everybody is trying to prove whos’ milk is better than whos’…some said theirs have DHA and ARA…some even said they have CHOLINE as an added nutrition…some also said they have it for immune function and development….hmmmmm……

still trying hard to regain full breastfeeding to my baby…i came across this article…and hope that anyone who is reading this article…let it be a parent or not…may consider these FACTS from now on or in the future….BREAST MILK….it is a GIFT from ALLAH almighty….

"Children are the most precious gifts to parents. The most valuable gift parents can give in return is good nutrition, which will help them grow and develop. So, let us take a look at the discoveris on goo nutrition.

DISCOVERY #1 - DHA and ARA

DHA(docosahexaenoic acid) and ARA (arachidonic acid) are 2 types of fat that play important roles in brain development. They are both found in BREASTMILK and are highly concentrated in the brain and eyes. DHA and ARA are large molecules that come from a family of fatty acids known as the ‘long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids’ (LCPUFAs). LCPUFAs are recognised by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO)/World Health Organization (WHO) as essential nutrients for young and older children.

DISCOVERY #2 - CHOLINE

Choline is a vitamin lioke substance found in many foods, including BREAT MILK. Choline supports overall mental functioning, where it is vital during the period of rapid brain growth and development. Like DHA, choline accumulates in the brain during this period. Choline is recognised by the US Institue of Medicine (IOM) as an essential nutrient with recommended daily intakes for all age groups. An ‘essential nutrient’ is a substance that must be obtained from the diet because the body cannot make sufficient quantities to meet its needs.

DISCOVERY #3 - IMMUNE FUNCTION AND DEVELOPMENT

Omega-3 and Omega-6 vLCPUFAs are components important for maintaining the structure and function of immune cells. Omega-3 (alpha-linolenic acid) and Omega-6 (linoleic acid) fatty acids are precursors of DHA and ARA respectively. ARA is the precursor of a group of compounds that promote inflammation, such as prostaglandins and leukotrienes. DHA, on the other hand, decreases the production of inflammation-promoting cytokines, hence is anti-inflammatory. Therefore the balance of LCPUFAs is important for immune system modulation. It is known that DHA and ARA can be converted into specific molecules that are essential for childhood immunity. For example, DHA and ARA can be broken down into compounds known as eicosanoids, which regulate several important processes in the immune system in young children. Eicosanoids are therefore crucial to the immune response in young children."

I Thank Allah for giving me this opportunity to breast feed My Iris…..i just hope that i will be able to continue nursing her until she reaches the age of 2!!!I pray to Allah so that my good intentions be fulfilled!

With that i prayed that Iris will grow up into a bright and good person!
